Is India a poor country?

Ask Swiss Bank. With personal account deposit bank of $1,500 billion in foreign reserve which have been misappropriated, an amount 13 times larger than the country’s foreign debt.

Indian money stashed in the Swiss Bank has become a focal point of debate these days.

According to Prof R Vaidyanathan, Professor of Finance at the Indian Institute of Management - Banglore, in 2006, the most recent Global Financial Integrity study, developing countries lost an estimated $858.6 billion to $1.06 trillion in illicit financial outflows. According to his report, the average amount stashed away from India annually during 2002-06 (only for 5 yrs) is $27.3 billion. So the estimation that the Indian money stashed away may be of the order of $1.4 trillion in 55 yrs after India got independence in 1947. India will be in the top five league if all the ill-gotten money is brought back. read more
